Magescape budget magic find throw barb (HC)

Hey everyone, it's a myth that throw barbs need Phoenix and Fort in order to perform well. Here I'll present a budget MF gear set and a max MF gear set for you to consider.

Throw barb is essentially a Javazon with more health, team synergy, and no need for an infinity due to the magic damage that results from +skills gear along with grim ward breaking phys immunes. Magic immunes aren't an issue, neither is AR.

Skills

20 BO, 20 ethrow, 20 bash, 20 power throw, 1pt throw mastery, 1pt natural res, 1pt increased speed, rest in grim ward or your choice (but grim ward feels great).

Stats: enough strength for gear, enough dex for warshrikes, rest in vitality. Once wearing SS, I like max block, and dex adds to your damage anyway.

Leveling

Use double swing with some good weapons, or just let yourself get carried and max BO first so everyone loves you and teleports for you. Honorable mention goes to cleglaw gloves: you can knockback and slow the whole screen constantly, making things very safe for your team and yourself even if you do zero damage due to 20 points in BO.

Budget MF (~175 mf)

Everything here costs ~1 ooc later in the ladder, or even early ladder if you refresh trades often.

  • Warshrike
  • Nightwings (target: 3os 3ptopaz), or anything with +1 or +2 skills
  • Naj's plate (target: 4os 4ptopaz), or anything with +1 skill
  • Vidala ammy (for pierce)
  • Vidala boots (for pierce)
  • Razortail/IK belt (for pierce or res)
  • Spirit shield
  • Manald heal
  • Ravenfrost (or carrion wind if you can't afford a raven yet)
  • Dracul's grasp (Mega safe HC option, more leach than phoenix, shines against blood lords) / ghoulhide / soul drainer / LoH / 20ias knockback mana leach gloves, potentially hitpower crafted.
  • Barb combat skillers, plain

If you're mega budget, consider IK gloves, boots, belt, which give you +2 to combat skills and IAS. IK belt is very common so it should be easy to slam for pierce.

Merc: a2 defiance with eth obedience, melee splash, ias in gear. Doesn't even need leach b/c of your dracs.

Playstyle: you'll be doing >1k magic damage per throw and have ~2k life, allowing you to farm the pit relatively safely, or shenk. When doing icy/frigid you'll want to use howl when chargers get closer, to prevent them from hitting you. Don't get max block with spirit's low block rate. Be careful of mana burn blood lords, those will get your heart rate up. You can solo hell ancients at level 76 with dracs.

"Endgame" MF (~340 mf)

  • Max dmg warshrike (2nd choice: eth warshrike)
  • Arreats 3os (ptopaz, cham, ED/ias)
  • Skullders 4os upped with 4ptopaz
  • Highlords w/ +1 skill
  • Gore riders with allres
  • Razortail (pierce or max light res)
  • Stormshield (4ist)
  • 5-6 mana leach w/ 40+ mana (6pdr) Larger mana pool helps a ton.
  • Carrion wind (6 pdr)
  • Drac's (allres)
  • Barb combat skillers with life, 20 life scs, torch, anni, gheeds

Merc: eth plague legend sword a5 merc with any good helm/armor. Might and shedding curses makes a massive difference to your safety and DPS (decrep is very annoying). Last season I used a plague a2 defiance merc, which while still good, is overdoing it.

Playstyle: You'll have 100% deadly strike, do 300-700 phys (600-1400 after DS, ~2.5k magic damage, and 2.4k-2.9k+ life. If you hit 10 targets with one throw with 100% pierce, you're dealing ~35,000 mixed damage to every enemy close enough to get hit by a bolt. This allows you to kill trash mobs even in full games. Hitting more enemies per throw means more DPS, which is why you want to walk right up in front of the enemy before attacking. Sounds dangerous right?

Carrion wind + dracs make you into an unstoppable tank. Every enemy will be stunned for seconds by your twister procs, allowing you to run past blood lords and hell whips. You can occasionally turn around and throw back once or twice to clean them up. Your life tap procs mean you're leaching an insane amount and your health globe will rarely not be full. Everything is stunned so you aren't taking hits anyway. Also you'll have max block at this point.

Map times

These are my times. I may pick up more than you, and I like to hork the elites at the start of maps. Avoid maps with combinations of +phys damage, amp/decrep, and deadly strike, those can be killers.

  • Musty Crypt: 900-1000 density, solo: 40 mins w/ horking, 32 mins PB.
  • Desecrated Temple 900 density, solo: ~25-30 mins.
  • Icy Cellar, solo, flip: 6-7 mins if you hustle; 10-12 minutes at a normal pace. 25 minutes if re-path from start for more elites.
  • Frigid, solo, flip: 7 mins if you hustle; 15 minutes at a normal pace. Decrep really slows you down. Hold your ground against the boss, or turn on walk only. Running will get you killed.

Notes

  • Drac's makes a massive difference to your safety. You'll need 35 ias off weapon with warshrikes, so you'll need a 15ias jewel somewhere and highlords or cat's eye (worst case).
  • Freeing the ravenfrost ring slot by putting a cham in your arreats makes a massive difference, because you'll be able to use carrion wind along with your mana leach ring.
  • Merc only dies once every few solo maps, life tap and carrion wind keep him alive
  • Grim ward is great for blood lords, everything rips apart like paper, and team synergy. If you want you can cast it once before you throw, but it's not usually needed when soloing. If you're with a bowazon they might appreciate it.
  • Team synergy swap: atma's amulet with laying of hands. This lets you amp damage the whole screen to help your bowazon.
  • Get strong enemies against a wall so your ethrow bounces back and does more damage.
  • A5 merc stun is very handy vs map bosses, although you do leach enough that desert, forest, and frigid bosses are not dangerous at all.
  • Keep a spare lawbringer in your stash for Baal, and swap to LoH so he doesn't spawn a clone. I've tested edeath frenzy / WW swaps and they're not worth it. better to just buy 8-12 mana pots and keep throwing. Stay right on top of Baal and he's less likely to drain your mana.
  • Throw mastery is a trap. It only adds 1 pierce per level and adds very little damage.
  • Phoenix is fine if you want to use it, but the 30% DR from Stormshield is a life saver, and redemption maps are a bit of a nerf. It is nice vs ghosts that drain your mana, although overall I think it's way too expensive for the value (also you can't hit max block easily).
  • Enigma is nice too, 100 mf, tons of strength, life on kill, 45 frw, teleport. Hard to turn it down if you have it, although I personally didn't care to pay for it. teleporting into the middle of packs can be fun and fast.

This build has been a lot of fun for me this season because I love finding tons of good items. Thanks for making ethrow Greendude! Maybe we'll get an ethrow helmet staffmod someday :)
