What is a Melee Splash Jewel

A jewel with the 'Brute's' affix "melee attacks deal splash damage".

Melee splash jewel

What is Splash Damage?

When socketed, an attack modifier adds damage in a cone-shaped area around the enemy hit with the melee attack. If the initial target is missed, a separate chance-to-hit is then calculated for each monster within the cone. By increasing the area of effect (AoE) of melee attacks, this item goes some way to balancing the clear speed between caster and melee builds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do they drop?

They can drop anywhere.

Why was it added?

To give melee builds a way to catch up with caster clear speed.

Melee Splash damage is the same as your Normal Attack tooltip damage. To see your melee splash damage, switch to Normal Attack and open your character sheet. This number isn't affected by skill-based damage modifiers. Here's an example of what affects the damage:

a Normal Attack with Might aura active is applied to Melee Splash damage; however, subsequently selecting Sacrifice and attacking will not apply any additional Melee Splash damage.

Within the melee splash cone, chance to hit is calculated for each monster individually, according to the standard formula. Attack Rating bonuses from melee skills are added.

The affix doesn't apply to Area of Effect skills, e.g. Whirlwind.

Only On-Striking does splash, not On-Kill or On-Attack effects.

Melee Splash damage is counted as a ranged attack, it has a 2 frame Next Hit Delay.

Melee splash is categorised as ranged damage and has ranged penalties. Examples: Crushing Blow, Ranged Life-on-Hit instead of Melee Life-on-Hit.
